The Future of Training for the Oil and Gas industry: New Simulation and technology tools

Training requirements for the Oil and Gas Industry are rapidly evolving to include: • Reduced training timescales as more experienced personnel leave the industry • Reduced opportunities to demonstrate standard practice on live plant • Increased requirement to understand more automated control systems • Increased requirement to control unusual and emergency situations without damage to the environment or jeopardising human life. It is now recognised that over 40% of all significant accidents are caused by a lack of correct information and communications between the control room and field operators. New simulation and training tools have to include both the Control Room and the Field Operator in an interactive, instructor controlled, isolated environment. The presentation will look at the latest forms of control room simulation capability and how these may be linked to the field operator using fully interactive 3D imagery of the plant, its controls and instrumentation.

Training & Simulation Bringing MPD Technology To Life

The technological advancements in MPD enable us to drill and explore in more complex ways than ever before. Nonetheless, our exposure to higher risks remain. There is no denying the potential for catastrophic outcomes if we lose control or barriers fail. Thus a lot of effort goes into ensuring all the key players are trained to a high standard and on the same page when it comes to well control with MPD installed. Training is essential, but simulation in training can be invaluable when utilised to its full potential. This session aims to showcase progress in MPD procedures, guidelines and equipment specific to well control, and how it has allowed both contractors and operators to achieve their goals with confidence.

Industrial large-scale simulators for engineering courses

Engineers’ understanding of dynamic process simulation and simulator training is essential for the successful implementation and utilization of simulators in the industry. How should industrial large-scale simulators be applied in the engineering curricula? Which aspects of industrial training can benefit engineering education? This presentation demonstrates the use of a large-scale oil and gas process simulator for engineering courses with two case examples. The learning experiences and results are presented, and suggestions for collaboration between industry and academia are outlined.

Maximising Value in Lifecycle Simulation

Recent focus in the UKCS to improve revenue has focussed on maintenance to improve efficiency and the uptime of plants. While benefits need to be realised this way it is only part of the picture. Maximum Recovery is achieved through uptime and maximising fluid volumes. This requires a focus on the dynamic behaviour of a plant and a deep understanding of the fundamental thermodynamic constraints and basis of design present. This presentation outlines some of the fundamental steps in lifecycle simulation and how to maximise benefit in today’s constrained environment.
